Unit Converter

The Radix Quest Converter transforms numeric values between supported measurement units. It provides 15 categories covering physical measurements, engineering quantities, time, and digital data.

Using the Converter

  1. Open the Converter tab.
  2. Select a Category.
  3. Choose the From unit.
  4. Choose the To unit.
  5. Enter an Amount.
  6. Read the Converted value.

The result updates automatically when the amount or selected units change.

Swap Units

Click Swap to exchange the From and To selections.

The amount remains unchanged, and the converter recalculates the result.

Supported Categories

Length

UnitSymbol
Metrem
Kilometrekm
Centimetrecm
Millimetremm
Micrometreμm
Nanometrenm
Inchinch
Footft
Yardyd
Milemile
Nautical milenmi

Example:

1 mile = 1609.344 m

Mass

Supported units:

kg, g, mg, μg, lb, oz, tonUS, tonUK

The converter distinguishes US short tons from UK long tons.

Time

Supported units:

s, ms, μs, ns, min, h, day, week, year

The implemented year is:

31,557,600 seconds

This corresponds to 365.25 days.

Temperature

Supported units:

C, F, K

The converter uses Kelvin as its intermediate reference.

Examples:

0 °C = 32 °F
100 °C = 373.15 K

Temperature conversion uses offset formulas rather than simple multiplication factors.

Area

Supported units:

m², cm², mm², km², ft², in², yd², acre, hectare

Volume

Supported units:

m³, cm³, mm³, L, mL,
tspUS, tbspUS, flozUS,
cupUS, pintUS, quartUS, gallonUS

The customary liquid-volume units are US measurements.

Speed

Supported units:

m/s, km/h, mph, knot

Example:

1 m/s = 3.6 km/h

Pressure

Supported units:

Pa, kPa, MPa, bar, atm, psi, mmHg, inHg

Energy

Supported units:

J, kJ, Wh, kWh, cal, kcal, BTU, eV

The converter distinguishes calories from kilocalories.

Power

Supported units:

W, kW, hp

The hp unit represents mechanical horsepower.

Angle

Supported units:

rad, deg, grad, arcmin, arcsec

Frequency

Supported units:

Hz, kHz, MHz, GHz

Force

Supported units:

N, kN, lbf

Torque

Supported units:

N·m, lbf·ft

Data

Supported units:

bit, byte,
kB, MB, GB, TB,
KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB

Decimal vs Binary Data Units

Radix Quest distinguishes SI decimal prefixes from binary prefixes.

UnitBytes
kB1,000
MB1,000,000
GB1,000,000,000
KiB1,024
MiB1,048,576
GiB1,073,741,824

Example:

1 MB ≈ 0.95367432 MiB

This distinction is particularly useful for storage, memory, and data-size calculations.

How Conversions Work

Most categories use a reference-unit conversion factor.

Conceptually:

Result = Amount × From Factor ÷ To Factor

Temperature uses dedicated conversion functions because Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin have different zero points.

Numeric Formatting

The converter formats results according to magnitude.

For moderate values, it uses up to eight decimal places.

Very small or very large values are displayed in scientific notation.

Input Requirements

The Amount field accepts values that JavaScript can parse as finite numbers.

Examples:

100
3.5
-12
1e6

The converter also removes underscores before parsing.

Invalid values clear the converted output.

Limitations

  • Currency conversion is not included.
  • Live exchange rates are not included.
  • Compound unit expressions cannot be entered manually.
  • Conversions are limited to the provided catalog.
  • Values use JavaScript floating-point arithmetic.
  • Results may be rounded for display.
  • Temperature conversion does not enforce physical absolute-zero limits.
  • The converter does not provide an uncertainty or significant-figures calculator.

Troubleshooting

No Converted Result

Ensure the Amount contains a valid number.

Unexpected Result

Check the selected units, especially similarly named decimal and binary data units.

Too Many or Too Few Decimal Places

The application applies its own output formatting and does not currently expose a precision selector.

Wrong Category

Select the correct Category before choosing the From and To units.

Tip: When comparing advertised storage capacity with software-reported memory or disk sizes, check whether the units are decimal (GB) or binary (GiB).
