Privacy, Limitations, and Troubleshooting

GIF Ops is a client-side GIF editing tool designed to create captioned animations through browser-based processing.

Privacy

The GIF Ops interface states:

This site will never save or sell your data.

The supplied implementation reads GIF files through browser APIs and processes their frames locally.

It does not include a GIF upload endpoint that sends files to a QVLx server for editing.

External Resources

The page requests web fonts from:

fonts.googleapis.com

The editor also loads a local script:

/gifshot.js

Google Fonts is an external resource and can involve network requests to Google-operated services.

This does not mean GIF Ops uploads your GIF files to Google Fonts.

The source of the bundled gifshot library was not provided, so its complete behavior and version have not been independently inspected.

Local Processing

The supplied implementation uses:

  • File and ArrayBuffer APIs
  • WebCodecs ImageDecoder
  • Canvas 2D
  • JavaScript memory
  • Browser downloads
  • gifshot encoding

Uploaded GIF frame data is processed locally in the page.

Browser Requirements

GIF Ops requires a browser that supports WebCodecs ImageDecoder for GIF decoding.

A browser without this API cannot use the current decoding implementation.

The application recommends current Chromium or Edge browsers.

Common Problems

GIF Does Not Load

Possible causes:

  • Unsupported browser
  • Invalid GIF
  • Damaged GIF
  • Failed WebCodecs decoding
  • Insufficient browser memory

Try another GIF or a supported browser.

"Your browser lacks WebCodecs ImageDecoder"

The browser does not expose the required API.

Try a current Chromium-based browser.

Frames Are Missing

The decoder obtains frame count from the selected animation track.

If decoding fails or the file is malformed, the complete frame timeline may not be available.

Text Does Not Appear

Confirm that:

  • A GIF is loaded.
  • The correct frame is selected.
  • The text field is not empty.
  • The text is positioned within the canvas.
  • Text color and opacity make it visible.

Text Is Outside the Frame

Adjust X and Y offsets or drag the text anchor to a visible location.

Text Is Too Large

Reduce Font Size.

The editor does not automatically wrap long captions.

Text Appears on Only One Frame

This is expected.

Each frame has independent settings.

Use Copy → All or Apply current settings to range.

Captions Change During Playback

Different frames may have different text settings.

Pause and inspect each frame.

Caption Editing Feels Inconsistent During Playback

The form does not automatically synchronize with every playback frame change.

Pause playback before editing.

Rendering Does Not Start

Verify that:

  • A GIF loaded successfully.
  • The Render button is enabled.
  • /gifshot.js loaded.
  • The browser has sufficient resources.

"gifshot not found at /gifshot.js"

The required GIF encoder script is missing or unavailable.

GIF Export Is Slow

Large GIFs and unusual frame delays can create many intermediate frames during encoding.

Use smaller GIFs when possible.

Exported Colors Look Different

The GIF encoder quantizes image colors.

This can affect gradients and text antialiasing.

JSON Import Causes Problems

The imported settings may not match the loaded GIF's dimensions or frame count.

Use settings exported from the same original GIF.

Current Feature Limitations

GIF Ops does not currently implement:

  • Video import
  • Multiple independently movable text layers
  • Automatic multiline wrapping
  • Frame insertion or deletion
  • Frame reordering
  • Manual frame delay editing
  • Motion interpolation
  • Cropping
  • Resizing
  • Undo and redo history
  • A project format containing the source GIF
  • Exact preservation of original GIF compression and palette data

Performance Considerations

GIF Ops stores decoded frames in individual canvases.

Large animations can consume considerable memory.

Rendering also creates intermediate PNG data URLs and may repeat frames to reproduce animation timing.

For best results, begin with short GIFs at moderate resolutions.

Security Considerations

Uploaded Files

Only load GIF files from sources you trust.

GIF decoding takes place inside the browser, and malformed files may trigger decoding errors.

Imported JSON

JSON settings are not comprehensively schema-validated.

Malformed or incompatible settings can cause application failures.

Content Security Policy

The supplied HTML contains inline JavaScript and CSS.

A strict Content Security Policy would need to account for those resources or require moving them to external files.

Third-Party Dependencies

The page loads Google Fonts and a GIF encoding library.

Review external and bundled dependencies as part of normal application security maintenance.

Recommended Workflow

  1. Preserve the original GIF.
  2. Use the editor to add captions.
  3. Save JSON settings.
  4. Preview the entire animation.
  5. Render and download the GIF.
  6. Verify the downloaded file in a separate viewer.

Summary

GIF Ops provides an accessible, client-side workflow for adding customized text to animated GIFs.

Its frame-specific editing tools, batch operations, animation preview, and JSON settings export make it useful for memes, reaction GIFs, short animated captions, and lightweight visual content creation.
