PDF Viewer

Papercraft includes a browser-based PDF viewer designed for convenient document inspection. The viewer provides multiple display modes and zoom controls for working with documents of different sizes.

Opening the Viewer

Select Viewer from the main navigation.

You can also navigate directly to:

#/viewer

Papercraft automatically redirects its home route to the Viewer.

Opening a Document

Use the Viewer's file selection interface to choose a PDF.

The application uses PDF rendering functionality supplied through its browser-side PDF libraries.

The specific file picker controls depend on the Viewer module.

Viewing Modes

The supplied application's feature description identifies three primary viewing modes.

ModeDescription
Actual SizeDisplay the document at its normal rendering scale
Fit WidthScale pages to the available viewer width
Fit PageScale a complete page to fit the available viewing area

Actual Size

Actual Size is intended for viewing a document at its standard display scale.

This is useful when you want to inspect the document without automatically fitting its width or height to the viewport.

Actual Size refers to display scaling; it should not be interpreted as a guarantee of exact physical paper dimensions on every monitor.

Fit Width

Fit Width adjusts the display scale so the page fits the available horizontal space.

This is useful for:

  • Reading documents on narrower screens
  • Viewing portrait-oriented pages
  • Maximizing horizontal visibility
  • Reducing unnecessary side-to-side scrolling

Fit Page

Fit Page scales a PDF page so it can fit within the available viewing area.

This is useful for:

  • Reviewing complete page layouts
  • Inspecting margins
  • Checking page composition
  • Viewing presentation-style documents

Zoom Controls

The viewer supports zooming in and out.

Zoom In

Increase the display scale to inspect smaller text or fine visual details.

Zoom Out

Decrease the display scale to see more of the page at once.

Resize-Aware Display

Papercraft's Viewer is described as resize-aware.

This means its layout is intended to respond to changes in the available viewing dimensions.

For example, switching between a wide desktop window and a narrower window can affect the available page display area.

PDF Rendering

The supplied HTML includes PDF.js:

pdfjs-dist 3.4.120

PDF.js provides browser-based PDF rendering capabilities.

The application's actual Viewer module determines how its rendering APIs are used.

Understanding Viewing vs. Editing

The Viewer is primarily a document inspection tool.

OperationViewer Purpose
Display PDF contentYes
Adjust visual zoomYes
Fit page dimensions to viewportYes
Change original PDF page dimensionsNot established
Modify document contentNot established
Export altered PDF filesNot established

Zooming and fitting are display operations. They do not inherently modify the original document.

Troubleshooting

PDF Does Not Open

Possible causes include:

  • Unsupported or malformed PDF data
  • Password-protected content
  • Browser resource limitations
  • Missing or blocked PDF libraries
  • File loading errors

Page Looks Too Small

Try Fit Width or increase zoom.

Page Extends Beyond the Screen

Try Fit Page or decrease zoom.

Rendering Is Slow

Large documents or pages containing complex graphics may require additional processing time.

A PDF Feature Does Not Display Correctly

PDF documents can contain advanced features that are not rendered identically by all viewers.

Try another compatible PDF application if the document requires specialized functionality.

Best Practices

  • Use Fit Width for reading.
  • Use Fit Page for layout inspection.
  • Increase zoom when inspecting small details.
  • Keep original PDF files unchanged.
  • Verify important document content in an appropriate PDF viewer.

Note: The Viewer documentation describes the capabilities confirmed by Papercraft's application description. More specific controls and behaviors depend on the Viewer module implementation.
